Modeling alliance activity: Opportunity cost eVects and manipulations in an iterated prisoner’s dilemma with exit option

چکیده
We model the two-Wrm alliance as an iterated prisoners’ dilemma game with an exit option and test several theoretical predictions over two experimental studies. A new major eVect on alliance performance arises by including the exit option (i.e., the option to end the alliance and receive a Wxed payoV that is less than the payoV for mutual cooperation but greater than the payoV for mutual defection). The opportunity cost levels of the Wrms either directly or indirectly inXuence alliance cooperation and alliance payoVs through aVecting the alliance strategies that the Wrms choose. Implications for partner selection, alliance selection and structuring, and strategy choices along the alliance lifespan, build on these results. © 2006 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Using an Iterated Prisoner's Dilemma with Exit Option to Study Alliance Behavior: Results of a Tournament and Simulation
Nearly half of all strategic alliances fail (Park and Russo, 1996; Dyer et al., 2001), often because of opportunistic behavior by one party or the other. We use a tournament and simulation to study strategies in an iterated prisoner’s dilemma game with exit option to shed light on how a firm should react to an opportunistic partner. Our results indicate that a firm should give an alliance partn...

The objective of this paper is to clarify the characteristics of alliance network that Japan belonged to after the World War II. On that alliance network, which Japan belonged to after the World War II, iterated prisoner's dilemma game will be played.
متن کاملModeling Cooperation between Nodes in Wireless Networks by APD Game
Cooperation is the foundation of many protocols in wireless networks. Without cooperation, the performance of a network significantly decreases. Hence, all nodes in traditional networks are required to cooperate with each other. In this paper, instead of traditional networks, a network of rational and autonomous nodes is considered, which means that each node itself can decide whe...
متن کاملPutting the Prisoner’s Dilemma in Context
Abstract. The standard iterated prisoner’s dilemma is an unrealistic model of social behaviour because it forces individuals to participate in the interaction. We analyse a model in which players have the option of ending their association. If the payoff for living alone is neither too high nor too low then the potential for cooperative behaviour is enhanced. For some parameter values it is als...
متن کاملEffects of increasing the number of players and memory size in the iterated
The Prisoner’s Dilemma has become a paradigm for the evolution of altruistic behaviour. Here we present results of numerical simulations of the infinitely iterated stochastic simultaneous Prisoner’s Dilemma considering players with longer memory, encounters of more than two players as well as different payoff values. This provides us with a better foundation to compare theoretical results to ex...
